Nu-Blu: Blending Bluegrass Roots with a Modern Edge
Nu-Blu, a North Carolina-based bluegrass band with a contemporary acoustic twist, is redefining the sound and spirit of bluegrass. Led by the husband-and-wife duo Carolyn and Daniel Routh, the band seamlessly blends tradition with innovation, creating a sound that feels both timeless and fresh.
Carolyn the powerhouse lead vocalist, and Daniel, the band’s guitarist and creative mastermind are the heart of Nu-Blu. “We always say that bluegrass and country are cousins,” Daniel explains. “You gotta start with the roots, you gotta teach people where it came from, so they can understand where it’s at and where it’s going,” Carolyn states.
Carolyn’s journey has been marked by profound resilience. At just 34, she suffered two strokes that left her unable to move her right side or even speak. For a time, music seemed beyond her reach. “Bass was a part of my therapy, learning how to use my hands and fingers again,” she recalls. Her recovery has been nothing short of remarkable, and today her voice once again soars as one of Nu-Blu’s defining features.
The band’s lineup features Justin Harrison on mandolin and Austin Hefflefinger on banjo. During the pandemic, Justin set out to learn a new instrument—the banjo—but since Austin already played it, Justin decided to try the mandolin instead. “I was trying to work out a tune for our song ‘Whirlwind,’ but I just couldn’t figure it out on the banjo,” Justin admits. “That’s when I realized I’m better at the mandolin than the banjo.” Austin, on the other hand, is determined to master “chicken pickin’,” the rapid, twangy picking style often heard in country guitar, and is working on adapting it to his banjo playing.
Nu-Blu isn’t just a band—they’re also the hosts of Bluegrass Ridge, a syndicated television show described as “MTV for bluegrass,” by Daniel. Airing across 19 states and five countries, the show reaches 120 million homes every week with bluegrass music. “It’s a blessing to be able to take a genre that we love so much and give it to that many people,” Daniel says.
Their song “Time (Still on Your Side)” made history as the first-ever AI-generated bluegrass music video, helping Nu-Blu reach an entirely new, younger generation of fans.
Nu-Blu’s most recent single, Nobody’s Business but the Moon, tells the tale of a woman seeking justice after being wronged by a man. It’s a modern, fiery story wrapped in traditional instrumentation, showcasing the band’s ability to balance heartfelt storytelling with fresh, bold perspectives.
With five Billboard Top 10 albums under their belt, Nu-Blu continues to push boundaries while staying true to their roots. By blending heartfelt storytelling with modern innovation, the band is carving out a legacy as one of the key forces keeping bluegrass both relevant and timeless.
